Newport Beach, California(October 26, 2010)….. Southern California based construction firm, J.A. Stowell Construction, Inc., has announced the completion of Phase III expansion at Los Angeles’ only outlet shopping center, Citadel Outlets for developer Craig Realty Group. The 157,000 square-foot expansion which includes the addition of 36 new stores and a new two-level parking structure (69,616 square-feet) was completed on September 23, 2010. In addition to completing the new construction, J.A. Stowell Construction, Inc. built-out the new interiors of the 20,000 square-foot, two-story, Nike Outlet; the 3,500 square-foot Anchor Blue Outlet; the 2,500 square-foot O’Neill Outlet; and the 1,500 square-foot Spritz Outlet. The expansion brings the Citadel Outlets to 433,210 total square feet of buildings.
“As the general contractor for the Citadel Outlets expansion, we were challenged with constructing the new buildings and parking structure in a completely active shopping environment along with expansion of one of the existing stores into the new phase”, said Jim Stowell, president of J.A. Stowell Construction, Inc. “After construction began, an additional 25,000 square-feet of second-story retail space was added to the scope of work, but our construction team was able to complete the project on-time and within budget, which was very satisfying. The Nike Outlet was not scheduled to open until the spring of 2011, but we incorporated its tenant improvement into our shell work in order to open the store before Black Friday*. In addition, we worked closely with architects and developer Craig Realty Group to carry the extensive details of the design to completion.”
Citadel Outlets is known throughout Southern California for its historic Assyrian-style castle wall located on Interstate 5 at the Atlantic Boulevard exit in Commerce. The Phase lll construction carried the Assyrian-theme of the historic wall through a variety of traditional stone and plaster details reminiscent of the highly decorative style of the original 1929 builder of the Citadel, Adolph Schleicher and L.A. architectural firm Morgan, Walls and Clements. Several layers of formed cornices, ornate features, and interlocking pavers throughout the courtyard, plus canvas awnings, steel and aluminum trellises were added in the construction. Four escalators and two elevators were installed in the Nike and H& M Outlet stores and extensive tile work was completed in the public restrooms.
